Behind the Veil

(Heb 10:19-20, 22) Since therefore, brethren, we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh…let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith.”

This past duck season my daughter Kinsey had the chance to accompany me to a very special hunting spot that my good friend Ox owns. He and his brother Willie have several hundred acres that border a federal wildlife refuge which holds tens of thousands of ducks every year. Since the property is landlocked the feds have to give Michael a right-away through the sanctuary. It is a unique experience to drive up to the large metal gate marked with a sign that says “Area Closed” and chained with a huge brass lock stamped with the initials of the U.S. Federal Wildlife Department, pull out a key, open said lock and drive through said gate.

On this day Kinsey and I loaded up in the Man Machine (aka the camo Burb), drove to the shop at Dixie where we met Ox. We threw our stuff in his truck, headed down the road through the gate to the back side of the farm for an afternoon of hunting. After our shoot we were standing at Mike’s rig watching the setting sun when we saw an incredible sight. All of a sudden the evening sky was full of quackers headed back to the refuge to roost. I’m not talking about a few healthy flocks – it was one solid cloud of ducks. There were so many you could not see the beginning and the end at the same time. It was a massive flight of feathers which almost blotted out t he sky for a few minutes.

As we sat on Mike’s truck watching this sight I told Kinsey that she was witnessing something few people living today have ever seen. I wanted her to soak up this experience and to understand what a privilege it was to be on the back side of Dixie looking and listening to thousands of ducks in the air above us. And it was all because she was with the one who could drive through the gate.

And so it is with God. Consider what Christ’s life, death and resurrection have accomplished for us. It is because of Him that our sin is obliterated. It is because of Him that Heaven is thrown open to us. It is because of Him that we enter the presence of our God as His sons. It is because of Him that we trade the trinkets of this passing world for that which is eternal.

It’s amazing what you’ll see when you are with the one who can open the gate.

Blessings to you boys,
